Trio of Accordion Books via private Zoom

from $295.00

Instructor: Bari Zaki

No group Zoom workshops are currently scheduled. That said, the full-length live recording is available, either on its own, or with the option of scheduling a private or semiprivate workshop (in addition to the recording). No previous bookbinding experience is necessary. See the dropdown below for pricing.

The accordion structure is lovely for drawing in a multitude of media: marker, pen, coloured pencils, and with a brush for watercolours, gouache, or acrylics. An accordion is also great for collage, calligraphy, photos, and ephemera—and any combination thereof.

What you’ll make: Three 5 x 5 accordion books with 18 pages (nine 2-sided panels). Each book stands up on its own when closed; it fans open to be about a yard long, and will stand gracefully without support.

After you’ve folded the accordion pages for your three books, I demonstrate several options for connecting your five accordion folios. Next, you will create your covers by following several paper-folding steps. Each pair of covers and its folios magically connect together without any glue. The magic word is interlocking.

Ingeniously, the only tools you will need are: a bonefolder, a glue stick, a triangle ruler, and a pair of sharp scissors. The bookboard (for your covers) can serve, in the absence of a triangle ruler, as your straight edge for measuring and folding your cover papers. A spine is optional, and your kit of materials will include a piece specifically for this, should you choose to make a spine. I also demonstrate a non-paper spine option.

The kit includes all papers you will need to make three books, available in four different palettes. Everything is cut-to-size: 15 sheets of Stonehenge, my personal favourite (5 x 20); 6 pieces of bookboard (5 x 5); 12 sheets of Fabriano Tiziano for your covers, 4 sheets x 3 colours (5 x 10); 3 sheets of the Tiziano, one in each of your 3 colours, for your potential spine (5 x 3).

Class fee includes the materials (but not the tools) we use to make three books. The four palettes are shown here (left to right). Please order from the dropdown menu below. If you’d like to purchase an additional set of materials, you certainly can. However, you cannot accomplish this in the dropdown menu (because one set of materials is included with the workshop fee). To order additional sets of materials, please just send me an email and tell me which palette(s) you’d like, and I will be in touch extremely promptly. It’s $125 per additional set of materials. (No shipping fee if you order at the same time as your workshop registration.)

And if you’d like a new bonefolder or fresh glue stick, you can add these to your workshop order (at no additional shipping charge).

This recording is 4-ish hours in total. It includes the “natural pauses” from the original workshop sessions, giving you time to complete the various steps. You can pause the video wherever and as often as you’d like, but you may not need to at all.

To schedule a date & time, add this class to your cart, and then email barizakistudio@gmail.com with your preferred date(s) and time of day. Feel free to call or e me with any questions (773-294-7766 or barizakistudio@gmail.com).

I look forward to sharing my long-standing love of papers & bookbinding with you.
