Glueing Happiness Season 3 via private Zoom

from $295.00

Instructor: Bari Zaki

No group Zoom workshops are currently scheduled. That said, the full-length live recording is available, either on its own, or with the option of scheduling a private or semiprivate workshop (in addition to the recording). No previous bookbinding experience is necessary. See the dropdown below for pricing.

This workshop is a great opportunity to become more comfortable and dextrous deploying glue & a glue brush for a wide range of creative projects. You will make a trio of identical structures, a hardcover padholder-folder, using three different decorative papers. You will experience firsthand the different ways in which various surfaces—decorative papers, paper-backed bookcloth, metal, and even wood—react once you’ve applied P.V.A. glue. You will also wrap a trio of pencils with Tassotti papers from Italy. And I will share my personal tips for trimming & glueing your pencil-covering papers perfectly. As a bonus, you will learn to wrap three medium butterfly-clips, to secure your sheaflets of drawing paper.

In this pre-recorded gluetorial, you will:

  1. Experience glueing five distinctive bookbinding materials

  2. Learn to make a hinged book cover

  3. Acquire the skill to wrap a perfect corner

  4. Learn how grain direction impacts the glueing process

  5. Practice ways to minimize glueing mishaps

  6. Learn to care for your glue brush

Workshop fee includes all the materials (but not the tools) you’ll need to make three hardcover padholder-folders: Japanese decorative papers; Cambridge Imprint papers; Wanderlust papers; paper-backed bookcloth for your spines; a stacklet of lovely drawing paper (to divide into your three sheaflets); binders board cut to size for you; a trio of pencils, and, last but not least, 3 madam-sized butterfly clips to cover with decorative papers.

Tools needed: Glue & a glue-brush, bonefolder, teflon bonefolder (optional, but useful) & an X-acto knife. You can purchase these items individually here, and I am pleased to offer a 20% discount on any tools ordered for the workshop (via refund after your workshop purchase).

Ancillary tools needed: Cutting mat, ruler, triangle ruler, pair of sharp scissors, pencil, a small cup for your glue, scrap paper for glueing on, a small cloth to keep your fingers glue-free, and, optionally, a small wastepaper basket for your gluey scrap papers.

Nota bene: If you have the necessary tools but are in need of the glue & glue brush, you’ll find them in a separate shop listing here.

The materials shown here are a seasonal array of Japanese papers, Cambridge Imprint papers, Wanderlust papers, Tassotti papers & bookcloth. I look forward to assembling each kit individually with a complementary combo. If particular colours or patterns catch your fancy, please e me and I will do my best to accommodate.

If you’d like to purchase an additional set of materials, you certainly can. However, you cannot accomplish this in the dropdown menu (because one set of materials is included with the workshop fee). To order additional sets of materials, please e me and I will be in touch extremely promptly. It’s $145 per additional set, with no shipping fee if you order at the same time as your workshop registration. And I will be sure that you don’t receive any duplicates.

This recording is 4-ish hours in total. It includes the “natural pauses” from the original workshop session, giving you time to complete the various steps. You can pause the video wherever and as often as you’d like, but you may not need to at all.

To schedule a date & time, add this class to your cart, and then email barizakistudio@gmail.com with your preferred date(s) and time of day. Feel free to call or e me with any questions (773-294-7766 or barizakistudio@gmail.com).

I look forward to sharing my long-standing love of bookbinding, glueing, and beautiful materials with you.
