Book of Engaging Pages: 2-session workshop via Private Zoom

from $295.00

Instructor: Bari Zaki

No group Zoom workshops are currently scheduled. That said, the full-length live recording is available, either on its own, or with the option of scheduling a private or semiprivate workshop (in addition to the recording). No previous bookbinding experience is necessary. See the dropdown below for pricing.

What you’ll make: An elegant book with four different styles of pages—six pocket-pages, separated by a single-fold folio; two 4-page signatures; two 3-panel gate-folded pages; and two “booklets-within-the-book”, each holding a 4-page concertina. Your book will have a Japanese Chiyogami or Katazome paper cover with inside pockets front and back. The spine is flexible, and the book lays completely flat when open.

What you’ll learn: To think about making & sequencing pages that are ideally suited to what you are going to draw, sketch, organize, collect, or write. The book you make will be versatile and also give you ideas for future bookbinding projects. The pagination is in your imagination!

About the structure: Measures 6 x 7½ x 1½. Long-stitch binding with sturdy softcovers reinforced with a double-thick layer of Stonehenge paper.

Recording #1: We begin, as always, with a brief introduction about paper grain and a review of workshop tools. Next, you will measure, fold, score, and trim the Stonehenge & Hahnemühle Bugra papers to create your pockets, signatures, folios, and concertinas.

Recording #2: Time to make your delicious “paper sandwich” for the cover and then reinforce it with Stonehenge. Next, you will prepare (aligning, marking, piercing) our pages for stitching, and then you will stitch our book with the Long-stitch. A blush of accomplishment ensues!

Your kit includes all the materials (but not the tools) you’ll need to make one book:

1 piece of Japanese Chiyogami or Katazome for your front & back cover (11 x 16)

1 double-adhesive sheet (the sandwich “filling”) (11 x 16)

1 piece of Stonehenge for your front & back cover (11 x 16)

2 pieces of Stonehenge for reinforcing your front & back cover (7½ x 11)

3 pieces of Stonehenge for your double pockets (11 x 12½)

6 pieces of Stonehenge for your signatures & folios (11 x 15)

2 pieces of Hahnemühle Bugra for your concertinas (7¼ x 20)

6 slim strips of double mount to seal your pockets (½ x 4)

1 5-yd length of 4-ply waxed-linen thread on a piece of binders board

The three cover options shown here (left to right) are: Wild Strawberries, Cloud Peaks, and Woven Mums. Please order from the dropdown menu below. If you’d like to purchase an additional set of materials, you certainly can. However, you cannot accomplish this in the dropdown menu (because one set of materials is included with the workshop fee). So, please e me, and I will be in touch extremely promptly. It’s $145 per additional set. Shipping is gratis if you order at the same time as your workshop registration.

Tools needed: Bonefolder, lightweight awl, X-acto knife, straight bookbinding needle. My Basic Bookbinding Kit has all the tools you’ll need. You can also purchase these items individually, and I am pleased to offer a 20% discount on any tools ordered for the workshop (via refund after your workshop purchase).

Ancillary tools needed: Ruler, triangle ruler, glue-stick, pair of sharp scissors, pencil, and a cutting mat.

If you have the necessary tools but are in need of the glue & glue brush, you’ll find them in a separate shop listing here.

This recording is 6-ish hours in total. It includes the “natural pauses” from the original workshop session, giving you time to complete the various steps. You can pause the video wherever and as often as you’d like, but you may not need to at all.

To schedule a date & time for a private or semiprivate, add this class to your cart, and then email barizakistudio@gmail.com with your preferred date(s) and time of day. Feel free to call or e me with any questions (773-294-7766 or barizakistudio@gmail.com).

I look forward to sharing my long-standing love of bookbinding, and beautiful materials with you.
