The No. 18 bookbinding needle is the ultimate basic, and I use it for almost everything. It’s easy to thread with 4-ply waxed thread as well as unwaxed. The No. 25 is slightly thicker, with a larger eye, and it neatly accommodates 7-ply thread.

The curved mattress needle (size: 2 x 21 gauge) is what you want for any Coptic-stitch binding. It will accommodate 7-ply waxed thread in addition to the 4-ply. Our other curved needle is slightly smaller (size: 2.5 x 20 gauge) It feels a bit daintier in the hand and does not disappoint when you’re stitching. (4-ply thread is best to use with this needle.)
