Currently offered only as a private or semiprivate 2-part (five hours in total) class. Add to Cart & email to request a date & time.

We begin, as always in our bookbinding classes, by getting acquainted with paper grain and its importance for the finished book. After an overview of the bookbinding tools you will use, you will fold ten full-size sheets of text-weight paper down to progressively smaller sizes. Next you will learn to hand tear your edges to create a beautiful deckle, an essential beginning (in our opinion, and not humble) for any handmade book!

You will learn to cut board using our professional board-cutter. Then you will cover your boards with beautiful Japanese fabric and paper, creating an elegant and tactile cover.

By the end of this class you will have one completed book, plus the tools (bone folder, shipping clerk’s knife, lightweight awl) and confidence to make more at home, thanks to our charming illustrated handout with step-by-step instructions.

Class fee includes all materials we use to make a book: Binders-board, Japanese papers, bonefolder, shipping clerk’s knife, lightweight awl, Xacto blade, scissors, ruler, triangle rulers. linen thread, needle. tea. happiness.

Our studio is light-filled, airy, and organized. You are welcome to browse our extensive library of books about bookbinding, calligraphy, and drawing. We look forward to sharing our love of paper & bookbinding with you in this three-ish hour workshop!
