Description:

In England, in the latter part of the 18th century and at the age of 72, Mrs Mary Delany invented the art of painted paper collage when she embarked on her series of almost 1,000 botanical illustrations. In the mid-20th century, and just shortly before his death, Henri Matisse made his famous cut-outs on a large scale. In this class, we’ll explore painted paper collage. We’ll learn how to paint flat, rich, vibrant color and draw with scissors. We’ll also learn good gluing techniques to ensure we have a finely crafted piece.

In the first part of the class, we’ll experiment with free form color mixing and prepare a selection of colored papers. Then we’ll create an abstract image with attention to contrast and composition. In the second part, we’ll render something in cut-out style.

Painted paper collage is a beautiful way to learn to simplify and make strong, graphic art. The class will focus on how to modulate color, create strong compositions and attend to craftsmanship. It will be fun!

For inspiration, we’ll look at work by Matisse and Mrs. Delany.

Each participant will get a full set of Pelikan opaque watercolors, a
special brush and a Flexi sketchbook to take home. And a printout from the instructor outlining what we have done.
