If you like a journal where the pages lie flat, leaving you enough room to adhere photos, ephemera, or miscellany papery collections, alongside your sketching, doodling & drawings, then you will enjoy knowing how to create a handmade book in this style!

This binding style accommodates all weights of paper beautifully.
An added plus, we think!

This particular style of long-stitch binding dates back to Italy in the 18th century at least... it is a non-adhesive style binding which requires no glueing! And we particularly love that, because you can make these books easily at home and/or while you travel, if you like.

Class Description:

We begin as we always do in our bookbinding classes; getting acquainted with paper grain, it's integrity for the finished book & a handful of tools you will need for future bookbinding - All of which are included in the cost of this class.

We will fold several full size sheets (22 x 30") of drawing papers into smaller folios to create a nice size book. Then creating a sturdy cover with a lofty sheet of handmade paper, finishing up with an interior pocket/envelope on the front and back covers. - Happiness!

Also, your finished book with have hand-torn, known as deckle-edges, on all three sides of your book - More happiness!

By the end of this class you will have one finished book, and the tools and techniques to make more at home... including our charming illustrated handout with step-by-step instructions drawn by Emmy Kennett; our nimble shop assistant.

Our studio is light-filled, airy, & organized, including an extensive library of books about bookbinding, calligraphy, & drawing for your musings.
