from 185.00

Instructor: Bari Zaki. Currently offered only as a private or semiprivate three-ish hour class. No previous bookbinding experience necessary. To request a date & time, add this class to your cart, and then email with your preferred date(s) and time of day.

What you’ll make: You will learn how to sew three different styles of Japanese binding: (l. to r.) Kangxi, Hemp Leaf, Tortoise Shell.

We begin, as always in our bookbinding classes, by getting acquainted with paper grain and its importance for the finished book. After an overview of the bookbinding tools you will use, you will fold nine full size sheets (3 per book) of text-weight papers down to progressively smaller sizes. Next you will learn to hand tear your edges to create a beautiful deckle, an essential beginning (in our opinion, and not humble) for any handmade book!

These make great sketchbooks, journals or albums. Make them smallish and carry them around to take stylish notes!

By the end of this class you will have one completed book, and the confidence to make more at home, thanks to our charming illustrated handout with step-by-step instructions. You will also receive a bone folder, and a 20% discount on any additional tools purchased the day of class.

Class fee includes all materials we use to make three Japanese style books: Japanese papers, European mouldmade papers, heavy weight awl, Xacto blade, ruler, triangle rulers. thread, needle,

Our studio is light-filled, airy, and organized. You are welcome to browse our extensive library of books about bookbinding, calligraphy, and drawing. We look forward to sharing our love of papers & bookbinding with you in this three hour workshop!
