Bookbinding Workshop: Long-Stitch Binding | Bari Zaki

from 185.00

Instructor: Bari Zaki. Currently offered only as a private or semiprivate three-ish hour class. No previous bookbinding experience necessary. To request a date & time, add this class to your cart, and then email bz@barizaki.com with your preferred date(s) and time of day.

What you’ll make: If you enjoy using a journal where the pages lay flat, leaving enough space to affix photos, ephemera or miscellany, in addition to your sketches, doodles, or drawings… you will love learning to create a handmade book in this style.

We begin, as always in our bookbinding classes, by getting acquainted with paper grain and its importance for the finished book. After an overview of the bookbinding tools you will use, you will fold ten full-size sheets of drawing paper (with deckled edges) into signatures to create a nice thickness. Next you will create your cover by measuring, folding, and scoring a luscious sheet of handmade paper. Finally you will sew your cover and pages together, using the long-stitch binding technique developed in Italy in the 18th century. Felicitazioni!

By the end of class you will have one completed book, plus the tools and confidence to make more at home, thanks to our charming illustrated handout with step-by-step instructions.

Class fee includes all materials we use to make a book: Handmade paper, European mouldmade paper, bone folder, shipping clerks knife, lightweight awl, Xacto-blade, tapestry needle, waxed-linen thread, tea, happiness.

Our studio is light-filled, airy, and organized. You are welcome to browse our extensive library of books about bookbinding, calligraphy, and drawing. We look forward to sharing our love of papers & bookbinding with you in this three-ish hour workshop!
