Bookbinding Workshop: Crossed Snowshoes | Bari Zaki

from 185.00

Instructor: Bari Zaki. Currently offered only as a private or semiprivate five-ish hour class. No previous bookbinding experience necessary. To request a date & time, add this class to your cart, and then email bz@barizaki.com with your preferred date(s) and time of day.

What you’ll make: A “fancy pamphlet” with an elegant track of x-stitches down its slim spine. You’ll fold two 4-page signatures and stitch them into a cover of Saint-Armand handmade paper. The front and back covers wrap in to form an interior envelope pocket.

We begin as always in our bookbinding classes, by getting acquainted with paper grain and its importance for the finished book. After an overview of the bookbinding tools you will use, you will fold one full-size sheet of drawing paper (with deckled edges) into two signatures. You’ll score your cover, and then select a complementary shade of waxed-linen thread for stitching the spine (using a needle at each end).

By the end of this class you will have one completed book, and the confidence to make more at home, thanks to our charming illustrated handout with step-by-step instructions. You will also receive a bone folder, and a 20% discount on any additional tools purchased the day of class.

Class fee includes all materials we use to make a book: European mouldmade paper, Handmade paper, bonefolder, shipping clerk’s knife, Xacto-blade, lightweight awl, waxed-linen thread, two needles, tea, happiness. We look forward to sharing our love of papers & bookbinding with you in this three hour workshop!

Our studio is light-filled, airy, and organized. You are welcome to browse our extensive library of books about bookbinding, calligraphy, and drawing. We look forward to sharing our love of papers & bookbinding with you in this three-ish hour workshop!
