NEW Bookbinding Workshop: Crossed Snowshoes | Bari Zaki

from 175.00

Instructor: Bari Zaki.

Date: Saturday, January 19 — 11am - 2pm - 1 seat open

What you’ll make: A “fancy pamphlet” with an elegant track of x-stitches down its slim spine. You’ll fold two 4-page signatures and stitch them into a cover of Saint-Armand handmade paper. The front and back covers wrap in to form an interior envelope pocket.

Class Size: 3 students. (Also offered as a private or semiprivate three-ish hour class. No previous bookbinding experience necessary. To request a date & time, add this class to your cart, and then email bz@barizaki.com with your preferred date(s) and time of day.)

We begin as always in our bookbinding classes, by getting acquainted with paper grain and its importance for the finished book. After an overview of the bookbinding tools you will use, you will fold one full-size sheet of drawing paper (with deckled edges) into two signatures. You’ll score your cover, and then select a complementary shade of waxed-linen thread for stitching the spine (using a needle at each end).

By the end of this class you will have one completed book, plus the tools (bone folder, shipping clerk’s knife, lightweight awl) and confidence to make more at home, thanks to our charming illustrated handout with step-by-step instructions.

Class fee includes all materials we use to make a book: European mouldmade paper, Handmade paper, bonefolder, shipping clerk’s knife, Xacto-blade, lightweight awl, waxed-linen thread, two needles, tea, happiness.

Our studio is light-filled, airy, and organized. You are welcome to browse our extensive library of books about bookbinding, calligraphy, and drawing. We look forward to sharing our love of papers & bookbinding with you in this three-ish hour workshop!
