2-Day Workshop: Long-stitch-link-stitch Binding with Hand-folded Envelopes | Bari Zaki

from 325.00

Instructor: Bari Zaki

Date: Saturday & Sunday, May 4 & 5 — 11am–3pm both days

What you’ll make: A beautiful (and useful) ephemera album or travel diary with hard covers, a soft fabric spine, and a pair of bound-in hand-folded envelopes.

Day One (4 hours): You’ll select your covering materials from a curated assortment of Japanese papers and fabrics. We will fold our signatures and then practice (with scrap papers!) how to construct an envelope. Then, we will make two paper sandwiches, which will become your pair of deluxe (with button-tie) envelopes to be bound in. We will take a field trip to Soutache down the block, to select suitable buttons to complement your envelope papers.

Day Two (4 hours): We will begin by gluing our cover. While it dries and presses, we prepare a spine template to map out our stitching. We then stitch the three signatures and two envelopes into the cover. We rejoice.

By the end of this class, you will have one completed book, plus the tools (bone folder, shipping clerk’s knife, lightweight awl) and confidence to make more at home, thanks to our charming illustrated handout with step-by-step instructions.

Class fee includes all materials we use to make a book: Drawing papers, bookbinding cloth, book-board, glue + brush, bonefolder, shipping clerk’s knife, heavy & lightweight awls, Xacto blade, scissors, ruler, triangle rulers. waxed-linen thread, curved needle.

Class Size: 3 students. (Also offered as a private or semiprivate 2-Day workshop.. No previous bookbinding experience necessary. To request a date & time, add this class to your cart, and then email bz@barizaki.com with your preferred date(s) and time of day.)

Our studio is light-filled, airy, and organized. You are welcome to browse our extensive library of books about bookbinding, calligraphy, and drawing. We look forward to sharing our love of fabric, paper & bookbinding with you in this 2-day workshop!
