NEW Bookbinding Workshop: Long-stitch-link-stitch Binding with Hand-folded Envelopes | Bari Zaki

from 325.00

Instructor: Bari Zaki

Date: Saturday & Sunday, January 26 and 27 — 11am – 2pm both days - 1 Seat Open!

What you’ll make: A beautiful and practical ephemera album or travel diary with hard covers and a soft fabric spine. You will learn to make envelopes using a technique I refer to as a “paper sandwich.” We layer a decorative sheet, an adhesive sheet, and a lightweight sheet to make a sturdy envelope (without a template!) with a custom string-and- button closure. We will take a little field trip down the block to Soutache to select suitable buttons to complement your two envelopes, which you’ll bind in between the three signatures.

Class Size: 3 students. (Also offered as a private or semiprivate class. No previous bookbinding experience necessary.) To request a date & time, add this class to your cart, and then email bz@barizaki.com with your preferred dates (consecutive) and time of day.

We begin, as always by getting acquainted with paper grain and its importance for the finished book. We also review the bookbinding tools you will use (and take home). You will select decorative papers and fabrics for your cover and spine. By the end of this class, you will have one completed book, plus the tools (bone folder, shipping clerk’s knife, lightweight awl) and confidence to make more at home, thanks to our charming illustrated handout with step-by-step instructions.

Class fee includes all materials we use to make a book: Drawing papers, bookbinding cloth, book-board, glue + brush, bonefolder, shipping clerk’s knife, heavy & lightweight awls, Xacto blade, scissors, ruler, triangle rulers. waxed-linen thread, curved needle.

Our studio is light-filled, airy, and organized. You are welcome to browse our extensive library of books about bookbinding, calligraphy, and drawing. We look forward to sharing our love of paper & bookbinding with you in this two-day workshop!
