NEW Bookbinding Workshop: Interwoven Folio Book | Bari Zaki

from 175.00

Instructor: Bari Zaki

Date: Saturday, March 2 — 11am-2pm

What you’ll make: A wonderful sketchbook or album à la paper sculpture. Accordion-ing your super structure — made from luxurious Saint-Armand handmade paper — requires precision measuring, hand cutting, and paper folding. This binding style involves no sewing or gluing!

Class Size: 3 students. (Also offered as a private or semiprivate three-ish hour class. No previous bookbinding experience necessary. To request a date & time, add this class to your cart, and then email bz@barizaki.com with your preferred date(s) and time of day.)

We begin, as always in our bookbinding classes, by getting acquainted with paper grain and its importance for the finished book. After an overview of the bookbinding tools you will use, you will fold five full-size sheets of drawing paper (with deckled edges) into folios to create a nice size book. And then you will pleat a narrow sheet of drawing paper to form the accordion that you “stitch” through slits you have cut in your folios, binding them together.

By the end of this class you will have one completed book, plus the tools (bonefolder, shipping clerk’s knife, lightweight awl) and confidence to make more at home, thanks to our charming illustrated handout with step-by-step instructions.

Class fee includes all materials we use to make a book: European mouldmade paper, handmade paper, bonefolder, shipping clerk’s knife, Xacto-blade, lightweight awl, tea, happiness.

Our studio is light-filled, airy, and organized. You are welcome to browse our extensive library of books about bookbinding, calligraphy, and drawing. We look forward to sharing our love of papers & bookbinding with you in this three-ish hour workshop!
